Funded. Not Hoped For.

A 50-year promise is easy to make and hard to keep. That is why every long-dated time capsule on MiFamilias is backed by an earmarked storage reserve — and why we publish the fund's health for anyone to check.

The 50-Year Problem

Most platforms make promises measured in quarters. A time capsule asks a platform to keep a promise measured in generations: a grandmother records a message today for a grandchild's wedding in 2056, and the platform must still be storing — and able to deliver — that file decades after the payment cleared.

The honest question is not "can you store it?" but "who is paying for year 37?". If the answer is "future revenue, hopefully", the promise is hope, not engineering.

How the Reserve Works

When you seal a capsule with an unlock date ten or more years away, MiFamilias does four things at the moment of purchase:

Every long-dated capsule carries its own endowment.

The Math That Makes It Possible

Long-term archival storage is remarkably cheap — when it is engineered for. Capsule media that won't be opened for decades is automatically tiered into deep-archive storage, where a typical video capsule costs pennies per year to keep. The platform warms the content back out of the archive in the days before unlock, so delivery is instant from the recipient's perspective.

At those rates, a typical capsule's 50-year storage liability is measured in single pounds — and the reserve holds four times that. The health ratio published above is the whole story in one number: the fund's remaining principal divided by every open capsule's remaining expected cost. Above 1.0, every sealed capsule is fully covered.

The Rules the Fund Lives By

What Comes Next: An Independent Trust

Today the reserve is an internal, audited ledger. As the platform grows, the pooled principal is designed to transfer into a separate legal entity — a trust or foundation with its own custodian and annual audit — so that the funding of your family's memories is protected even from us. The ledger was built for that handover from day one.

That is the standard we think a generational promise deserves: not a terms-of-service clause, but a funded reserve with its name on the door.
